Emmanuel Eneremadu’s Diary of the Most Improved Soldier tells of his life’s key moments, revealing his roots, struggles, and spirit. Rich storytelling invites readers to step back. It is a journey through life, love, hard work, and perseverance to succeed.
Humble Beginnings
Emmanuel’s story begins with this incredible tale of his parents’ relationship. His father, Chief Hyacinth Eneremadu Onwuekeikpe, known as “Alhaji,” met his mother, Mrs. Philomena Iwuh, as a teen.
At that time, being young and intent on winning over a girl was against the odds of society and culture. Education was for the privileged few. But his father’s work set an inspiring benchmark for future generations.
Emmanuel reveals that he was born in 1963 under exceptional circumstances. His father had to borrow money for a C-section. He promised never to do it again. It was a time that defined his father’s life, changing him forever.
He started as a poor trader in palm frond ropes. Then, he sold poultry, fish, and cattle. His Hausa trading partners praised him and named him “Alhaji.”
This work ethic became Emmanuel’s foundation. It instilled in him the values of perseverance and grit, which he carried into adulthood.
Survival Amidst Turmoil
The turbulent 1960s in Nigeria, a politically unstable state, defined Emmanuel’s childhood. The brutal Biafran Civil War caused it. Emmanuel saw the conflicts and atrocities of the civil war in his hometown, Mbaise.
As federal forces advanced, the authorities moved the family to Ikeduru for safety. A good photo shows his father cycling. Their mother walked by, holding some salvaged belongings. His little brother sat on the bike’s seat. It speaks to a survival instinct that defined their lives.
Their return to the village found it occupied by the military. This brought new challenges and new opportunities. Emmanuel’s father was resourceful. He built strong ties with soldiers by supplying livestock.
He used his business skills. This ability to adapt and thrive under pressure made the family resilient. It cemented their legacy.
With time, life returned to normal after the war. Emmanuel began his formal education. Central School Oboama enrolled him. He achieved academic excellence in a short time.
Unfortunately, his talent made his classmates envious. Bullies targeted Emmanuel on his walks home. His early schooling suffered. So, his father transferred him to a more secure L.A. school.
Even in hard times, his academic potential never went astray. He fed the livestock, fetched water, and helped with farm work. The chores were hard, but he vowed to escape that life. These gave him reasons to succeed.
He says passing the exam and getting into Mbaise Secondary School was a personal victory. In that moment, the joy was more than a school triumph. It was a lifeline to a better future.
Eneremadu’s memoir is full of a subtle balance between struggle and triumph. Teachers who saw his potential fueled his ambition. But life tested his strength. His parents’ separation was a bitter truth.
Young Emmanuel held firm despite his challenges. His youth left him with a deep drive to improve his life and honor his family’s sacrifices.
